FM200 Fire Suppression: Is It Right for Your Facility?

When a fire breaks out in a server room, data centre, or archive, the damage from a sprinkler system can be just as catastrophic as the fire itself. Water destroys electronics, irreplaceable documents, and sensitive equipment in seconds.

FM200 fire suppression systems were developed specifically to solve this problem. They suppress fires rapidly and effectively — without water, without residue, and without damaging the assets they protect.

If you manage a facility with high-value equipment or irreplaceable data, understanding FM200 is essential.

What Is FM200?

FM200 (also known by its chemical name HFC-227ea, or heptafluoropropane) is a clean agent fire suppressant stored as a liquefied gas under pressure. When a fire is detected, the agent is discharged into the protected space within 10 seconds, rapidly reducing the oxygen concentration and interrupting the chemical chain reaction of the fire.

The term "clean agent" means it leaves no residue after discharge — no powder, no foam, no water. Once the fire is suppressed and the space is ventilated, operations can resume with minimal disruption.

FM200 is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under its SNAP (Significant New Alternatives Policy) programme and is widely accepted by international fire safety standards including NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520.

How Does FM200 Work?

FM200 suppresses fire through two mechanisms:

1. Heat absorption — FM200 molecules absorb heat from the fire very efficiently, rapidly cooling the combustion zone below the temperature needed to sustain burning.

2. Chemical interference — FM200 also interferes with the chemical chain reaction of combustion, disrupting the free radicals that sustain the fire.

This dual action means FM200 works faster than inert gas systems and at lower concentrations, making it highly effective in the tight timeframes that matter in a fire emergency.

A typical FM200 system activates within 10 seconds of detection and achieves suppression within another 10 seconds — well within the critical window before significant damage occurs.

Where Is FM200 Used?

FM200 is the preferred suppression solution for any space where water or powder would cause unacceptable secondary damage:

Server Rooms and Data Centres

The most common application. A single server room fire suppressed by FM200 can mean the difference between a brief operational disruption and a catastrophic data loss event. FM200 protects the equipment and the data simultaneously.

Telecommunications Rooms

Network switching equipment, UPS systems, and communications infrastructure are all vulnerable to both fire and water damage. FM200 protects these critical systems without interrupting connectivity.

Control Rooms

Industrial control rooms, SCADA systems, and process control equipment represent enormous investment. FM200 allows rapid suppression without damaging the control systems that keep operations running.

Archive and Document Storage

Legal documents, financial records, and historical archives cannot be replaced. FM200 suppresses fires without the water damage that would destroy paper records.

Medical Equipment Rooms

MRI machines, CT scanners, and other high-value medical equipment require protection that will not cause secondary damage. FM200 is widely used in hospital equipment rooms.

Museum and Heritage Spaces

Irreplaceable artworks, artefacts, and heritage items require the most careful fire protection available. FM200 is used in museums and cultural institutions worldwide.

FM200 System Components

A complete FM200 suppression system consists of:

Detection system — Typically a very early warning smoke detection (VESDA) system or standard addressable smoke detectors, wired to a dedicated suppression control panel. The system is usually set up with a two-stage detection requirement (two detectors must activate) to prevent accidental discharge.

Agent storage cylinders — FM200 is stored as a liquid under nitrogen pressure in steel cylinders. The number and size of cylinders depends on the volume of the protected space and the required agent concentration.

Discharge nozzles — Specially designed nozzles distribute the agent evenly throughout the protected space to achieve uniform concentration.

Control panel — A dedicated suppression control panel manages detection, abort functions, pre-discharge warnings, and discharge sequencing.

Pre-discharge warning devices — Audible and visual alarms warn occupants to evacuate before discharge. A time delay (typically 30–60 seconds) allows evacuation before the agent is released.

Abort switch — Allows authorised personnel to cancel a discharge if the alarm is false, preventing unnecessary agent release.

Door and damper controls — Automatic door closers and HVAC dampers seal the protected space to prevent agent loss during discharge.

Design and Installation Requirements

FM200 systems must be designed and installed by qualified engineers following NFPA 2001 or equivalent standards. Key design considerations include:

Agent concentration — The system must achieve a minimum design concentration of 7–8% FM200 by volume throughout the protected space. This requires precise calculation based on room volume, temperature, and altitude.

Room integrity — The protected space must be sufficiently sealed to retain the agent concentration for at least 10 minutes after discharge (the "hold time"). A door fan test (room integrity test) is required after installation to verify this.

Cylinder sizing — The total agent quantity must be sufficient to achieve the design concentration in the protected space, with a safety margin.

Nozzle placement — Nozzles must be positioned to ensure even agent distribution, avoiding dead zones where concentration may be insufficient.

Maintenance Requirements

Like all fire suppression systems, FM200 systems require regular maintenance to remain reliable:

Monthly — Visual inspection of cylinders (pressure gauges, safety pins), control panel status check, and verification that all components are in place.

Annually — Full system inspection by a qualified technician, including detector testing, control panel function test, cylinder weight check (to verify agent quantity), nozzle inspection, and room integrity assessment.

Every 5–10 years — Cylinder hydrostatic testing as required by pressure vessel regulations.

Saudi Civil Defence requires that suppression systems be maintained by a licensed fire safety company, with records kept on site.

FM200 and Environmental Considerations

FM200 has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and is not classified as an ozone-depleting substance. However, it does have a global warming potential (GWP) and is subject to regulations in some jurisdictions.

For facilities with strong environmental commitments, alternative clean agents such as FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230) offer lower GWP while providing similar performance. Our team can advise on the most appropriate agent for your specific requirements and environmental policy.

Is FM200 Right for Your Facility?

FM200 is the right choice if:

  • Your facility contains high-value electronic equipment or irreplaceable data
  • Water or powder suppression would cause unacceptable secondary damage
  • Rapid suppression (within seconds) is critical to limiting damage
  • The protected space can be adequately sealed for agent retention
  • Occupants can evacuate quickly before discharge

If you are unsure whether FM200 is appropriate for your facility, our team can conduct a site assessment and provide a detailed recommendation.
